CHARACTER NAME: Tyki Mikk
FANDOM: D.Gray-man.
CANON: Just after leaving Allen to die in the bamboo forest! What is current canon, what is Allen doing alive. What.
WHAT THEY LOST: Any and all knowledge of the history/lore/background of the Noah clan. He'll still remember specific members that he's met, their personalities and interactions with him, but if they told him any of the mythos it'll just be a blur. He'll be as weirded out as anyone if Hoshino does any asspulls.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Tyki is a creature of disparate parts, with a tendency to compartmentalize and enough skill to be good at keeping up both sides of his life. In fact, Tyki is distinctive amongst his family for his love for both the human side of his life and the Noah side, and the different kinds of pleasure they bring to him. While most Noah when awakened care nothing for their human lives and abandon their old selves with ease, Tyki has clung to his human friends and the life he lived before his murderous heritage made itself evident.
When we first see Tyki in the manga, he's traveling with his human friends and working as a miner. He comes across as somewhat feckless, but good-natured – he cheats at cards to strip another man of all his belongings, and then gets cheated back (and divested of all his clothes, for being a cheat in the first place), but he's genuinely good-natured and a decent sport about all of this. This version of Tyki is only a bit of a black hat. He acts like a lovable rogue, and it's really not a facade, because Tyki genuinely enjoys that kind of life. He's a bit rough around the edges, but not a bad guy when he plays like this. He wouldn't really hurt anyone.
But sometimes, the feckless hobo gets a funny phone call, and then he has to make excuses to his friends, because he's going to disappear for a while – he has some other things to do!
And when he gets these phone calls, it's the other side of Tyki that appears – the black side, a little lordling who slicks back his hair, gets rid of the thick glasses and five o'clock shadow, put on the white gloves and lets himself go a little. He's good-looking, a heartbreaker, still a flirt and a charmer, but now he's also a killer. He rips peoples' organs out and tortures for pleasure and he genuinely enjoys all of this too – not more than he enjoys being a human, but just as much, certainly. He's the Millenium Earls' assassin, and he's working with the Noah family to usher in the destruction of humanity.
In the manga, we meet both sides of Tyki – first as the feckless friendly cardshark (not as good as Allen Walker) on the train, and then again as he makes the switch into his darker personality upon getting a phone call from the Earl. The first time he meets Allen, they have a good game of cards. The second time he meets Allen, it's in a bamboo forest, with Allen exhausted from trying to save a fellow Exorcist from damnation, and Tyki torments him with a feline, predatory pleasure, before putting a hole in Allen's heart and leaving the boy to die in the woods.
He doesn't hate Allen, not precisely. And it's not anything especially personal against the boy that drives his sadism. But Tyki is genuinely sadistic, and when he's allowing his darker side free reign he enjoys indulging in sadism, and takes pleasure in the fear and pain he causes. More than that, he enjoys treading this kind of line too. He likes living a contradiction, having human friends at the same time as he's part of a family that works to destroy the human race. Exorcists wear silver tokens with their names embossed, and when Tyki kills them he takes these and makes them little gifts for one of his human friends. He enjoys both sides of his life, but the only time they really cross over is in little ways like these, because his human friends can't know about the other side of them – not if he wants to keep them, and he does want to keep them.
Ultimately, Tyki balanced on a tightrope that he'll eventually inevitably fall off of. If he maintains his loyalty to his human friends, he betrays his Noah family; if he throws himself in entirely with the Noah, he has no chance of retaining his human connection. He's in a situation that's unsustainable, and while Tyki isn't the brightest of guys, he is perceptive and observant, and he certainly is intelligent enough to realize he's in a situation he can't maintain. It's unfortunate, for someone who takes such pleasure in balancing both sides of his life.
There's not much of anything known about Tyki's background before his Noah ancestry awakened. It seems likely that he was born around Portugal or some such, and that he had a fairly normal and nontraumatic upbringing although more than likely he was from the poorer class, slated to have a fairly normal life. No one could have predicted the Noah's awakening – none of his original family, at least. His more debonair self is a product of being adopted into the family of Noah as well. The hobo Tyki that wanders around playing cards and doing work in the mines is more than likely more true to his background.
Other than that, Tyki is also very much a hedonist. He is the Noah of Pleasure, after all. This doesn't necessarily entail a complete prediliction for the carnal pleasures, though (though certainly he appreciates them). He can enjoy a rich meal, good alcohol, a conversation, a game of cards, a challenging personality – and on the darker spectrum, of course, he enjoys terrifying someone, taunting them, breaking them, making a person suffer. He wants it all. At the point in time where he's drawn from here, he has it all, too. And he enjoys that.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Well, it wasn't as if it was exactly a necessity, like eating the koi had been because there was just not much else around and they were the quickest, fullest meal to be had. There was an entire wish-granting castle at his beck and call. Tyki could have gone and ordered a five-course ghost-catered meal for himself if he wanted to, and at any time he could leave off splashing around in the duck pond and go get himself a meal that wasn't raw and struggling.
Only raw and struggling was somehow a little nostalgic.
And besides, now he was annoyed.
Breeches rolled up, sleeves rolled up, white cotton shirt soaked against his skin, Tyki Mikk lunged with sprays of water going up in sheets around him and tried to grab another duck.
For being so fat and tame and so accustomed to residents feeding them bread, the damn birds sure were pretty fast when it came to slithering featherily out of his hands before he could really get any kind of grip on them. This duck was no different. With a quack of pure simpleminded outrage, it paddled madly with its feet, flapped wildly, and left him with nothing more than a forlorn, tattered brown tail feather for his trouble.
“Damn -” was all he had time for before he smacked facefirst into weedy water before floundering back to his feet again. Tyki was by no means a bad swimmer, but sloshing through thigh-deep water trying to catch ducks while not doing any kind of funny business made things harder. His hair was soaked now too, black curls stuck to his forehead and the back of his neck.
This shouldn't have been so hard. Tyki looked round grouchily at the pond again, rippling with his movements and not with much else. On the farther shore, the stupid ducks had gathered all together and were crowding away from the water, quacking and watching him with beady little eyes.
Tyki flicked a pond snail off of where it slimed placidly up his forearm, and glared at all of the birds. Their quacks were like a chorus of the most irritating little sniggers he'd ever heard.
No, he didn't have to eat any ducks. He could go in the castle and get as much food as he wanted, whatever he wanted. There was nothing logical about this.
But by now, this was different.
This was personal.
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: So much complaining. All of you in a world that can give you just about anything you could ask for to entertain yourself, surrounded by other people who could entertain you... I'm not even sure it's possible to help, in that case. Really.
But I suppose I'll give you all a chance. A little bit of direction for all this formless boredom churning around here. One-time only, I believe you all know what I mean.
I'm in the kitchen right now. There's going to be a little contest, for those of you who really have nothing better to do here, and my guess is that's quite a few of you listening. It's going to be a sandwich contest.
Yes. I want you to make me your best sandwich. I want you all to make me your best sandwiches. And the very best one? The one that I like most? Well.
For the person who makes that sandwich, there will be a fabulous prize.
[he yawns. and then chuckles.] Come one, come all~
INTENT: I'd really like to play a villain in Para, honestly! I feel that Tyki is a versatile and interesting character in his own right, though – he'll seek out potential friends and people to relax with for his White side, but other CR mates will end up hitting his Black buttons and encouraging his sadism and violent tendencies more.
The inherent conflict in his character, that he loves killing humans but loves humans as well, makes him a really interesting character to me, and I feel like he could become more than just a murderous cut-out. I'd like to play more with the bifurcation in his life in regards to his different sides too, and play him trying to keep them balanced and cultivate them both, because at this point in canon he really is committed to trying to keep them both working.
