Character NAME: Tyki Mikk
Canon & MEDIUM: D.Gray-man; manga.
Canon PULL-POINT: Shortly after leaving Allen for dead in the bamboo forest.
Character AGE: ~26 years old.
Character ABILITIES: Will a link suffice? Obviously, there are no Akuma in Exsilium, so he won't be able to exercise his command over them. He also hasn't ever entered his Awakened Noah form here and likely won't for a long while if ever, unless silly white-haired shonens get busy with their swords (ALLEN).
Character HISTORY: Little about Tyki's pre-series life is known, so any background written for him has a degree of headcanon in it. However, he isn't really forthcoming about his past.
We do know that Tyki was at one point a normal human being, as all Noah are before they Awaken. A moment's aside: "Noah" in the world of D.Gray-man are human beings who carry Noah's DNA. In series he was apparently not a pleasant man in the slightest, as the whole House of Noah bears a virulent grudge against humanity. The member of a house of Noah is known as an Apostle and there are always thirteen of them. If and when one is killed, then a random human somewhere on earth who carries Noah's DNA will "awaken" as a Noah, carrying the memories of their aspect, endowed with special powers as well as with a natural inclination to hunt and kill Exorcists and destroy their weapons.
This is how Tyki came to leave his purely human life behind. His Noah is the aspect of pleasure, and when the original host was killed, Tyki awoke with his new powers and nature integrated into a human mind. I tend to think he came from a rather poor background, from a large family; Hoshino confirms him as Portuguese.
When his Noah awakened Tyki had already left his family behind, with fond feelings but no particular special attachment. He'd been a drifter for much of his adult life, loathe to settle down anywhere and freed by his numerous siblings from any special responsibility towards his family. He worked on docks, in mines, on railroads, fleecing people of money at cards but harmless for the most part otherwise.
The Earl found him shortly after his awakening and collected him into the fold of his true family, where his met his Noah comrades. Here is where he learned about how to at least play at being a gentleman, assisted by fellow Noah Sheril's high station in life and generous estates. A cushy lifestyle couldn't capture Tyki's attention for too long, though. As much as he enjoys luxury, Tyki enjoys a bare and seedy kind of life, as well as the company of humans, which makes him unique amongst the Noah.
He didn't cast off ties of loyalty to his newfound family, but he did leave Sheril's estate to return to the life he knew better: a rambling life, carrying on hand to mouth and job to job. In his introduction in the manga Tyki is shown surrounded by a small band of other humans which he seems to have adopted as close friends, and I think it likely this group coalesced at this time in his life. They're his other adoptive family, friends he genuinely cares about and would do anything for. Tyki passes so well amongst them as a human that when he first meets series protagonist and Exorcist Allen Walker, Allen doesn't even look at him twice before accepting he is what he appears to be.
They play cards. Allen wins, stripping Tyki down to his underwear, and then kindly returns clothes and bags to the gang. Tyki and Allen depart with their respective groups of friends and it's here we see that Tyki's loyalty to his Noah family isn't swayed. He receives a phone call from the Earl, sent off on the hunt again, and this is where we leave Tyki this time around.
He appears once again after Allen is exhausted in the bamboo forest after his failed efforts to save the Exorcist Suman Dark. Suman transformed into a horrible creature as punishment for his cowardice in battle, and Allen managed to extract him from the monster: it briefly seemed that Suman was saved. However, as Allen sat in the woods trying to reach Suman, he found that the other Exorcist was brain-dead.
Whereupon Suman exploded into purple butterflies, and who strode out of the woods but Tyki himself? Tyki had implanted Tease into Suman's body after meeting with him briefly and manipulating Suman into a mental break, allowing Suman to live that much longer while the flesh-eating golems ate his insides and multiplied until they burst free. Tyki collected his new flock of Tease, securing them inside his own body, and then turned his attentions to Allen. This time, it was immediately clear to both men that they were enemies, and the Earl had sent Tyki on a hunt for one very particular person - Allen Walker, the young man sitting in front of Tyki on the ground at that very moment.
The two of them had a brief exchange of words but Tyki was on a mission and could not be put off. However, he refused to kill Allen outright. He wanted to sadistically torture the boy instead. It was this self-indulgence that would actually save Allen's life, as Tyki only had a Tease chew a hole in Allen's heart, and then left the boy for dead. For a normal human it would have been fatal. In Allen's case, a piece of Innocence, aka the holy weapon used by all Exorcists, remained within his body; it moved to his heart and sealed the wound closed. Allen survived.
But Tyki doesn't know anything about that. He took the silver pendant marking Allen as an Exorcist and left Allen behind in the woods, making his way to a koi pond where he took off his fancy shoes, rolled up his pants, and caught a fish with his hands to eat alive. Which is the moment when Tyki will be drawn into Exsilium.
Character PERSONALITY: A creature of many parts is Tyki, and the divisions he constructs within his mind are massively strong and - to be frank - completely unhealthy. A sane person could not adjust the way Tyki does to his double life. As well as he fakes sanity, as much as the "white" facet of his personality might be sane, that part is only a part, not less important to him (but not more important to him) than his "black" part, his Noah part, which drives his contained madness and his bloodlust.
White Tyki Mikk is a friendly, uneducated sort, a bit of a layabout, a good enough worker for a day or two but not one to put down roots. But oh, is he loyal to his friends, doesn't he do such a good job of looking after those who are put in his charge? He might be a bit of a ruffian and a card shark, but to his friends he certainly is a friend. And this is not wholly a farce. Tyki truly does love humans. He loves being able to rough up his hair, put his dorky glasses on, take the top hat off, and go without shaving for a while. He enjoys this life genuinely, and of the two it's likely that this is how Tyki started out before the Noah awoke in him. Though perhaps shiftless, this Tyki wouldn't be likely to go out of his way to do anyone harm. He's easygoing, if loyal. He doesn't crave luxury even as he enjoys to the fullest what he has; his luxury is having these friendships, connecting to these people. And then sometimes, he gets a phone call from a mysterious person, and all of this changes.
White goes to Black. Tyki takes off his glasses and shaves. He puts on a suit and white gloves, the pimpingest top hat this side of steampunk, slicks back his wild hair, and with that, a whole different side of himself emerges. The Noah side comes closer to his skin. Tyki Mikk hunts for the Millenium Earl, presented with "to-erase" lists and tracking down every last person written down on them, to be killed in ways that are inventive to say the least, because part of Tyki's Noah nature is sadism, and he takes pleasure in that as he does everything else. He loves the terror he kindles in people, watching their eyes and their faces and their reactions as they realize they have no chance against him, as they realize they're losing - whether they react with wild struggle, tears, pleading for life... there's pleasure in all of it. And this side of him is also essential. As Tyki says, without both sides of his life, without the chance to befriend humans, travel and live very closely with them... without the chance to kill humans, to hurt them and scare them and make them ready for the death he finally releases them into... he needs both sides for his life to be enjoyable.
The Noah Tyki puts his friendship with humans aside to go and do this; he loves killing humans as much as he loves spending time with them, he loves his Noah family as well as he loves his human family. He has a special soft spot for Rhode, and acts as an uncle to her sometimes. He plays the part of the gentleman although he has no real backing in it. In fact, it might be difficult to say who the "real" Tyki is; qualities of one side appear in the other. He gorges on raw fish stolen from a fountain while wearing his fancy suit and top hat. This unwillingness to be pinned down is definitely definitive of Tyki, as much as his loyalty to those he considers friends, his love of teasing, friendly while he's a human, much darker when his Noah side comes to the fore...
And if he were to think about it, likely he knows it's a dichotomy that can't possibly last. The goal of the Earl, the goal of the family of Noah, is eventually to destroy all humans... and when the race dies, so will his dear human friends. And yet Tyki is still capable of the mental gymnastics required to maintain both sides of his life. He's indolent, greedy, somewhat selfish really except when it comes to a few specific people. He likes to tease and he likes to hurt people and he likes to be liked, he likes the double life he leads. He functions in high and low society, he knows how to charm people, how to make them like him, how to talk, even if he fails hardcore at things sometimes and isn't exceptional in a way anybody would consider book-smart. Likely he's a rags to riches kind of tale, and Tyki would never want to go back to being just one thing, to having just one kind of life. The most consistent factor between his Black and White personalities is that he takes pleasure in everything he can.
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Although Tyki won't feel that he needs them, he will accept an elegant pair of knuckle-dusters from the Initiative's coffers. At first, they'll simply back up his punches. As they evolve, they'll reinforce his strikes with amplified power, making his blows far more likely to crack bone and bruise or even rupture organs. Since his strength is amplified from his Noah lineage already, this will be terrible.
Character INVENTORY: Tyki will be carrying the clothes on his back and a silver pendant he pulled off of Allen's body. Inside his body, he'll be carrying... probably several hundred Tease (flesh-eating golems shaped like butterflies). That's about the extent of what he has on him.
